How To Make DIY Skincare Products With The Right Digital Scales

Have you caught onto the latest trend for making your own skincare products?

Together with an increase in people wanting to care for the environment and be more sustainable, 2019 has been a year where more and more people are getting on board with the trend for making your own skincare products.

There may be any number of reasons for doing this, whether it be to have a clearer picture of what actually goes into the products that we put in our skin, a desire to reduce the amount of plastic we use with the packaging or just the simple pleasure of making something for ourselves.

A simple search on the internet can bring up any number of skincare product recipes for anything from soap through to sun tan lotion, face cream or even home cleaning products.

As with any food recipe, it’s important to invest in high quality basic ingredients but this still means that you can make some fabulous lotions for a fraction of the price of “normal” skin products.

As a passionate DIY maker herself, we asked our Managing Director, Jessie Nugent to provide us with her favourite skincare recipe that she makes at home with her daughters.

Jessie started making her own skincare products about a year ago after coming up short when looking for natural products that were not mostly water and where she could identify all the ingredients.

 Ingredients:

  • 115g Mango Butter
  • 115g Shea Butter
  • 115g Cocoa Butter
  • 20g Avocado Butter
  • 10 drops Raspberry Seed Oil*
  • 10 drops Broccoli Seed Oil*
  • 25g Jojoba Oil*
  • 25g Sunflower Oil*
  • 25g Hemp Seed Oil*
  • 25g Argan Oil*
  • 10g Rosehip Oil*
  • 30 drops Rose Geranium Essential Oil
  • 30 drops Clementine or Orange Essential Oil

Step 1: Using a double boiler, melt your butters.  Weigh out the ingredients using digital scales, then add all ingredients above marked with an asterisk. Stir thoroughly to combine. Remove from heat. Add essential oils and stir thoroughly.

Step 2: Put the bowl in the refrigerator until your lotion starts to set.  You don’t want it to be too firm.  It should look firm but mush easily when touched.  When it’s this consistency, use a hand mixer and whip it in to a fluffy, whipped body butter, consistency.  From here you can portion in to containers.  Then put it back in the fridge to set completely.

For full pots it’s a good idea to keep them in the refrigerator. Any open ones in-use can be left the bathroom, out of direct sunlight.

I use this on both face and body and it works best when applied right after the shower.  Since it is oil based it can feel a bit heavy so remember a little goes a long way.  I use ethically sourced and organic ingredients whenever possible.  This recipe has been tweaked many times over and will probably continue to change.  My family has found this to help heal spots/sores as well as other scratches and scrapes on the body.

DIY skincare products: what are the essential tools

  • Digital scales
  • Thermometer
  • Bain Marie or Double Boiler
  • Electric hand blender
  • Heatproof measuring jugs
  • Glass jars for storing the creams and lotions

The important things to look for in digital scales for this task is the ability to measure accurately to 0.1g, ideally to have a wipe down surface and the ability to use a TARE function so that you can add different ingredients to the same bowl.

We recommend the KB-2000 or ELS-500  digital scale for this recipe.  Both have 0.1g accuracy and a suitable capacity.
